Popular ABC radio personality Richard Fidler has been hospitalised after sustaining severe burns to his body during a "cooking misadventure" at his Brisbane home on the weekend.

A spokeswoman for 612 ABC Brisbane told brisbanetimes.com.au the burns were sustained during a freak accident concerning food and the announcer would undergo skin graft surgery later this week.

Mr Fidler had just returned to work with broadcaster after a six-week absence pursuing a Churchill Fellowship overseas and now faces a further three weeks off-air.

This afternoon, he told Twitter followers the burns were sustained during a “cooking misadventure”, were localised to one of his hands and arms, and he was in no immediate pain.

The ABC spokeswoman said the station planned to replay pre-recorded episodes of his Conversations program, and that Chris Welsh would continue to helm the Afternoons show.

“[Richard Fidler] is keen to let people know that he intends to be back before the end of the program year,” the spokeswoman said. “We're certainly keen to have him back when he's recovered.”

The support was echoed by Mr Fidler's colleague, popular ABC breakfast announcer Spencer Howson, who passed on his warm wishes this morning.

“We're all thinking of you,” Mr Howson Tweeted. “Do you need a digital radio [in hospital]? Can lend you one if you like…”

The station had been receiving messages of support via Twitter and email since the news was made public earlier today, including regards from ABC Managing Director Mark Scott and 7:30's host Leigh Sales.

I happened to be home today trying to catch up on sleep and housework.  Did neither much but I had the radio on and Richard came on James Valentine’s program to assure listeners that he’d be back.  He said the cooking accident was to do with trying to make this Thai dish using a cooking bowl and metho and it all went horribly wrong and set his shirt on fire and badly burned his arm and hand and his chest a little.  He’s had skin grafts from his thighs and has to wear a pressure glove and something on his arm but is OK and is getting better quicker than he had though.

There was something about how he is next year going to concentrate on the Conversation hour and learned lots from his fellowship in the US and will no longer be doing afternoons.  Though I wasn’t sure if I herd that correctly.
